Carole Emberton Addresses Fillmore’s Mixed Legacy at Ceremony

Each year, members of the UB community and the Buffalo region gather, usually braced against the cold, at Forest Lawn cemetery to celebrate the legacy of President Millard Fillmore. This year, Professor Carole Emberton spoke at the ceremony regarding the darker side of Fillmore’s legacy: his role in the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act, which resulted in at least two¬† black Buffalonians being sent back into enslavement.
