Fred Klaits, “‘Catch the Word’: Prophecy and Mentoring in African-American Pentecostalism”
March 27 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
A City and Society Works-in-Progress Talk
Fred Klaits is an Assistant Professor in the UB Anthropology department. He is currently engaged in a comparative project on Pentecostal insight, focusing on how believers in majority White and African American congregations in Buffalo, New York understand knowledge derived from God as essential to their well-being. He is exploring how specific sets of anxieties associated with Whiteness and Blackness lead believers to adopt distinctive methods for obtaining insights from God into their own and others’ life circumstances. Dr. Klaits will discuss his ongoing research on this project in Buffalo’s black Pentecostal churches.
The paper will be precirculated; please email Victoria Wolcott at firstname.lastname@example.org for a copy.
